Discovering Klockerkarscharte

Klockerkarscharte (2,798 m a.s.l.), located deep in the Pfunderer Mountains, part of the Zillertal Alps, is one of South Tyrol’s most remote and spectacular alpine passes. This high-altitude saddle connects the Valles Valley (Valle di Valles) with the Pfitsch Valley (Valle di Vizze), crossing rugged terrain of scree slopes, glacial lakes, and rocky ridgelines in a setting of pristine solitude.

The pass is a key stage along the renowned Pfunderer Höhenweg (Fundres High Route), a 70 km multi-day trek divided into six stages, linking Vipiteno (Sterzing) to Falzes (Pfalzen). Reserved for experienced hikers, the trail remains consistently above 2,000 meters and includes exposed sections, rocky traverses, fixed cables, and steep climbs. The area is free from tourist infrastructure, with distant huts and isolated alpine pastures offering a truly authentic mountain experience.

Highlights along the route include the Wilder See (Wild Lake), the Brixner Hütte (Bressanone Mountain Hut), and the towering Wilde Kreuzspitze (White Cross Peak, 3,135 m), which dominates the landscape. From the Klockerkarscharte, hikers enjoy sweeping views of the Dolomites, the Ortler Group, and even the Marmolada Glacier on clear days.

Culturally, the pass preserves traces of ancient transhumance routes and natural border crossings between valleys. Alpine huts such as Labesebenalm and Simile Mahd Alm reflect South Tyrol’s rural heritage and offer simple, genuine hospitality.
