Discovering Grasleitenscharte

The Grasleitenscharte, located at 2,601 meters above sea level in the heart of the Catinaccio Group, is one of the most enchanting alpine passes in the South Tyrolean Dolomites. Nestled within the protected territory of the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park, this destination is beloved by enthusiasts of authentic mountain experiences, alpine trekking, and nature photography.

The pass connects Val Ciamin with Val di Fassa via well-marked hiking trails. The most popular route begins in Tiers am Rosengarten, passing by the historic Rifugio Bergamo (Grasleitenhütte), located at 2,165 meters and dating back to 1887.

This area is ideal for experienced hikers seeking tranquility, breathtaking panoramas, and direct contact with nature. The trail, classified as medium difficulty, takes around 2h30 of walking and offers spectacular views of the Catinaccio d’Antermoia, the Croda di Re Laurino, and the imposing Dolomite rock towers. The region is particularly attractive for birdwatching and alpine flora observation, with seasonal blooms from June to August and sightings of birds of prey, marmots, and chamois.

From a cultural standpoint, the Grasleitenscharte reflects the multilingual identity of South Tyrol: the German name highlights the historic Ladin and German-speaking heritage, while the landscape tells tales of mountaineering, Dolomite legends, and spiritual connections to the mountains.
