Discovering Mitterbachjoch

The Mitterbachjoch is a high-altitude Alpine pass located in the Zillertal Alps, on the border between the Ahrntal (Valle Aurina) in South Tyrol and the Austrian Tyrol. At over 3,000 meters above sea level, it is one of the most spectacular crossings in the area, surrounded by glaciers, rocky valleys, and breathtaking views that extend to the Vetta d’Italia, the Corni di Gheda, and the peaks of the Großvenediger.

Popular with experienced hikers and ski mountaineers, the Mitterbachjoch can be reached via demanding routes starting from villages in the Ahrntal, such as San Giovanni and Lutago, leading to traditional huts and high-altitude pastures. In summer, the trails cross glacial landscapes and alpine meadows, offering direct contact with unspoiled nature and South Tyrolean rural culture. In winter, the regular slopes and snowy ridges are perfect for ski touring and snowshoeing, though they require technical preparation and careful attention to snow conditions.

The pass also has historical significance: for centuries it served as a link between Alpine communities, preserving the memory of ancient transalpine routes. Today, the Mitterbachjoch / Giogo del Rio di Mezzo is a destination that combines sport, landscape, and tradition, making it ideal for those seeking active and authentic holidays in the Dolomites and the Zillertal Alps.
