Discovering Forcella di Casies

Forcella di Casies, also known as Gsieser Törl, is one of the most captivating hiking destinations in South Tyrol, located at an altitude of 2205 meters in the heart of the Casies Valley, right on the border with East Tyrol. This natural mountain pass connects Italy and Austria through the wild and scenic Villgraten Mountains, offering an immersive experience of alpine views, traditional mountain huts, and borderland heritage.

The most popular route begins in Santa Maddalena, following CAI trail 49, which winds through larch and spruce forests, flower-filled meadows, and historic alpine huts such as Malga Pidig and Oberbergalm. With a total elevation gain of around 840 meters, the hike is suitable for moderately experienced hikers and rewards them with spectacular views of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, Plan de Corones, and the surrounding summits of the Puster Valley.

From a cultural perspective, Forcella di Casies is steeped in meaning: along the trail, hikers encounter abandoned border barracks, remnants of the Austro-Italian past and the frontier tensions of the 20th century. A boundary marker still stands at the pass, making the hike not only a scenic journey but also a symbolic passage through alpine history and the political geography of the Dolomites.

This area is ideal for those seeking sustainable tourism, authentic hiking experiences, and a deeper connection with the land.
