Discovering Krimmlertauern

The Passo dei Tauri (Krimmler Tauern) is an alpine pass located at 2,633 meters above sea level, on the border between Italy and Austria, in the beautiful Valle Aurina. This route offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and is of interest both for its natural beauty and historical significance.

Hike and route

The hike to the pass usually starts from Casere, the last village in the valley, following trail no. 14. The route is of hiking difficulty, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,050 meters and a duration of about 5-6 hours round trip. The path crosses untouched landscapes, traditional alpine huts, and seasonal alpine flowers, offering unique views of the surrounding peaks.

The pass

At the pass, visitors can enjoy panoramic views stretching from the Vedrette di Ries to the Austrian mountains. The pass also has historical importance: in 1947, over 5,000 Jews used this route to escape, crossing the pass to reach Italy and continue to Palestine.

Practical tips

  1. Recommended period: late June to late September, when the trail is free of snow and conditions are optimal.
  2. Equipment: sturdy hiking boots, clothing suitable for temperature changes, enough water and food.
  3. Return: it is recommended to take the same trail back, as alternative routes may be challenging.
