Discovering Krimmler Tauern

The Krimmler Tauern is an ancient Alpine pass at 2,634 meters, located between Austria and Italy in the Zillertal Alps. It connects the Austrian valley of Krimml (in Salzburg) with Predoi (Prettau), the northernmost municipality of South Tyrol, nestled in the Ahrntal (Aurina Valley).

The trail across the pass starts near the spectacular Krimml Waterfalls, among the highest in Europe, and ascends through a wild mountain valley to reach the Krimmler Tauernhaus, a welcoming alpine hut. From there, hikers continue through high-altitude landscapes, cross the border, and descend into Predoi, a former mining village surrounded by forests and peaks, now known for its visitor mine and protected environment.

Besides its natural beauty, the Krimmler Tauern holds deep historical significance. In 1947, it was part of the “Escape over the Krimmler Tauern”, when thousands of Jewish refugees crossed the mountains seeking freedom. Today, this route is also a memorial trail, marked by commemorative sites and events.

The pass is accessible only on foot and requires good physical condition and mountain experience, but offers a truly rewarding hike with breathtaking views, silence, and history. A unique route for experienced hikers looking to discover one of the Alps’ most remarkable and lesser-known crossings.
