Discovering Forcella Grande

Nestled in the heart of the Marmarole mountain group, Forcella Grande is one of the most captivating and untamed destinations in the Belluno Dolomites. This natural mountain pass, located at approximately 2,260 meters above sea level, connects the Val d’Oten with the upper Val di San Vito, offering a hiking experience immersed in an alpine landscape of rare beauty and solitude.

The mountain trails leading to the pass traverse scree slopes, narrow gullies, and rocky walls, with demanding elevation gains and breathtaking views of Mount Antelao, the King of the Dolomites, and the Marmarole range—one of the wildest and most remote groups in the entire Dolomite arc.

From a geological perspective, Forcella Grande is dominated by Main Dolomite, shaped over millennia by erosion and karst phenomena. The environment is rich in biodiversity, featuring rare alpine flora and fauna adapted to the extreme conditions of high altitude.

Although not directly part of the musealized routes of the Great War like nearby Lagazuoi, Forcella Grande lies in an area that witnessed the passage of the Italian-Austrian front, preserving historical traces and evocative landscapes that recall the conflict.

Forcella Grande is a destination to be approached with preparation and respect. It is a place where the authentic mountain reveals itself in its purest form—far from tourist circuits and close to the soul of those who know how to listen.
