Discovering Limo Pass
Limo Pass (2,174 m a.s.l.), also known as Limojoch in German and Ju de Limo in Ladin, is one of the most scenic alpine passes in the Fanes Dolomites, located between Fanes Grande and Fanes Piccola within the heart of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park in South Tyrol. This high-altitude saddle connects the Marebbe Valley with the Fanes Plateau, offering breathtaking views and access to one of the most enchanting landscapes in the Dolomites.
The pass is accessible via Trail No. 7 from San Vigilio di Marebbe, starting at the Pederü Mountain Hut, or via Trail No. 11 from San Cassiano, passing through the Capanna Alpina, Col de Locia, and the stunning Limo Lake (2,159 m). Both routes are part of the legendary Alta Via 1, a long-distance hiking trail that stretches from Lake Braies to Belluno, crossing some of the most iconic peaks of the Dolomites.
Nearby mountain huts such as the Fanes Hut and Lavarella Hut offer warm hospitality and are ideal bases for hikers, families, and nature photographers. The surrounding landscape features alpine meadows, vertical rock faces, glacial lakes, and unique geological formations like the “Parliament of Marmots”, a natural amphitheater of layered stone.
Culturally, Limo Pass is steeped in the legends of the Kingdom of Fanes, an ancient Ladin myth that permeates the region. The area is a haven for sustainable tourism, nature exploration, and high-altitude trekking.
