Discovering Welschnofen
Nova Levante, also known as Welschnofen, is a charming village in the Val d’Ega in South Tyrol, nestled among the majestic Dolomite peaks of the Catinaccio and Latemar, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This alpine hamlet is located just a few kilometers from Bolzano.
In winter, Nova Levante becomes the hub of the Carezza Dolomites ski area, offering over 40 km of perfectly groomed slopes, modern ski lifts, and activities for the whole family, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snowshoeing. In summer, the village transforms into a dense network of panoramic trails that wind through forests, alpine meadows, and breathtaking landscapes.
From a cultural perspective, Nova Levante maintains a strong connection to Ladin and Tyrolean traditions. Notable sites include the Parish Church of Saints Ingenuin and Albuin, dating back to the 13th century, and the monument dedicated to Theodor Christomannos, a pioneer of Dolomite tourism. Local legends, such as that of King Laurin and his enchanted rose garden, enrich the experience with a fairytale charm.
South Tyrolean cuisine takes center stage in the area’s mountain huts and restaurants, where visitors can enjoy specialties like dumplings, speck, apple strudel, and native wines. Just minutes from the village center lies the famous Lake Carezza, one of the most photographed destinations in the Dolomites, renowned for its shimmering colors and the mythical stories that surround it.
