Discovering Fortezza

Fortezza/Franzensfeste represents a historical gem of the Upper Eisack Valley, dominated by the imposing Franzensfeste Fort, a masterpiece of Austrian military architecture built between 1833-1838 under emperors Francis I and Ferdinand I of Austria. The "bombproof" fortress, erected at 750 meters altitude over 65,000 m², is the largest fortified complex in the Alps.

The Austrian fort, now part of the South Tyrol Provincial Museums, consists of lower and upper fortress connected by a spectacular underground staircase of 452 steps carved into the rock. The structure includes the famous "gold bunker" where 127.5 tons of Mussolini's gold were stored in 1943, and regularly hosts contemporary art exhibitions.

Fortezza is strategically positioned at the junction between Eisack Valley and Puster Valley, crossed by the Puster Valley Railway. Lake Fortezza, an artificial reservoir that submerged the village of Unterau, offers picturesque scenery for hiking and water sports.

The town serves as an ideal starting point for excursions to the Dolomites, Brixen, and Bolzano. For mountain weather enthusiasts, Fortezza offers unique alpine climatic conditions of South Tyrol, with seasonal variations ideal for cultural tourism and trekking year-round.
