Discovering Vandoies - Vintl
Vandoies is a community of just over 3,000 inhabitants located at 755 meters above sea level at the entrance of the Puster Valley. The municipality includes the villages of Vandoies di Sotto, Vandoies di Sopra, Vallarga, and Fundres. Known mainly for its traditional craftsmanship, especially the production of loden fabric and cheese, Vandoies also offers a close connection to nature thanks to the nearby Val di Fundres, one of the most authentic areas in South Tyrol. Here, time seems to slow down while walking from alpine hut to alpine hut along scenic trails.
Vandoies is perfect for families: the Elves’ Trail allows children to explore the local flora and fauna in a fun and educational way. The mountains of Fundres offer hiking opportunities for all levels, from easy walks to the challenge of the Alta Via di Fundres, a six-day route from Sterzing (Vipiteno) to Pfalzen (Falzes) crossing breathtaking landscapes. Don’t miss the Vandoies waterfall, which drops 43 meters, and the Ponte di Ghiaccio hut, a starting point for many hikes in this wild valley.
Mountaineering enthusiasts can test themselves on the climb to Gran Pilastro, the highest peak in the area. The Puster Valley Cycle Path crosses the village, connecting San Candido to Bruneck (Rio di Pusteria). For culture lovers, the Loden Museum, which tells the story of this fabric, and the Parish Church of the Annunciation with frescoes by Josef Anton Zoller are well worth a visit.
