Discovering Monguelfo

Monguelfo, a charming village in South Tyrol at 1,087 meters above sea level, is the gateway to the Val Casies and one of the most captivating destinations in the Val Pusteria. Surrounded by alpine landscapes of rare beauty, Monguelfo offers a blend of culture, history, and nature for a truly authentic and relaxing experience.

The town’s symbol is the Welsperg Castle, built in the 13th century and home to the Lords of Monguelfo for over 800 years. Today, it’s open to visitors and hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and guided tours. Nearby, nestled in the forest, lies the ruin of Thurn Castle, adding a fairytale touch to the scenery.

Monguelfo is also the birthplace of Paul Troger, a renowned Baroque painter celebrated through a cultural itinerary that includes his birthplace and works preserved in the Parish Church of Santa Margherita, located in the heart of the village. Just a short walk away, the Votive Church of Our Lady at Rain is visible from the Pusterbike Cycle Path, which runs through the entire Val Pusteria and connects Monguelfo to Dobbiaco and Brunico.

In summer, the village offers panoramic hikes, synthetic turf minigolf, an outdoor swimming pool, and traditional events like the Chocolate Festival. In winter, Monguelfo is an ideal base for skiing in the nearby Kronplatz ski area, just 13 km away, or for snowshoeing in the peaceful Val Casies.
