Discovering Karersee
Located at 1,520 meters above sea level in the municipality of Nova Levante, in Val d’Ega, Lake Carezza (Karersee) is one of the most photographed natural gems in South Tyrol. Known for its shimmering emerald waters and the perfect reflection of the Latemar mountain range, the lake is fed by underground springs and surrounded by a scenic 1.3 km loop trail, accessible to all and ideal for relaxing walks in every season.
Local legend tells of a water nymph named Ondina and a wizard who, in an attempt to win her heart, created a rainbow over the lake. When Ondina discovered the trick, she vanished, and the wizard shattered the rainbow, throwing its colors into the water—giving the lake its magical hues. A bronze statue in the lake commemorates this tale.
Lake Carezza is easily reached via the SS241 (Dolomite Road) and lies near Passo Costalunga. Nearby attractions include the Latemar Labyrinth, the Theodor Christomannos monument, and numerous hiking trails suitable for families and trekking enthusiasts. In winter, the area is part of the Carezza Ski resort, ideal for beginners and families.
