Discovering Passo di Falzarego
Falzarego Pass, at 2,117 meters in the province of Belluno, links Val di Fodom with Cortina d’Ampezzo and, via the nearby Valparola Pass, Val Badia. Situated along the SS 48 of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site, it offers panoramas of Lagazuoi, Cinque Torri, Sass de Stria, the Tofane and the Marmolada.
A favorite among hikers and enthusiasts of Alpine history, the pass features the Kaiserjäger trail winding through World War I trenches and tunnels, the Cinque Torri loop with a stop at Rifugio Scoiattoli, and the circuit around Lake Limides—a natural mirror reflecting the Dolomite spires.
Cycling tourism thrives here: Falzarego is a staple stage of the Maratona dles Dolomites and the Giro d’Italia. In summer, paragliding and Nordic walking in the Vincheto di Cellarda Nature Reserve attract adventurers of every level. In winter, the pass becomes part of the 5 Torri Ski Area within Dolomiti Superski, offering alpine runs and snowshoe itineraries.
Sunrises over Lake Limides, the autumn hues of Col Gallina and guided tours of Alpine history round out the Falzarego Pass experience.
Culturally, Falzarego Pass safeguards ancient Ladin traditions and the heroic legends of the Kingdom of the Fanes: among its rocky pinnacles one still hears tales of princes and warriors, while the Great War trenches have been transformed into open-air museums.
