Discovering Lajen
Laion (in German Lajen) is a charming municipality in South Tyrol, located at the entrance to Val Gardena on a sunny plateau overlooking the Isarco Valley. With its scattered farmsteads, open landscapes, and strong rural identity, Laion is the gateway to the Dolomites for those seeking a holiday full of nature, tranquility, and tradition.
The historic village center preserves an authentic atmosphere, with typical Tyrolean houses, flowered balconies, and a beautiful parish church featuring a Romanesque bell tower. Nearby are the hamlets of San Pietro (St. Peter), Ceves (Tschöfs), Tanurza (Tanurza), and Albions, connected by trails crossing meadows and forests, perfect for relaxing walks, scenic hikes, and bike rides.
One of the most charming excursions is the Post Trail (Sentiero della Posta), which connects Ortisei (St. Ulrich) in Val Gardena to Laion. Ideal in spring and autumn, this path passes through blooming alpine pastures and the enchanted Rasciesa forest, offering unique views and a full immersion in Dolomite nature.
In summer, Laion is a paradise for trekking lovers: trails lead to mountain huts and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Sassolungo (Langkofel), the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), and even the Val di Funes (Villnöss). Culture enthusiasts can visit local small museums, ancient farmhouses, and participate in traditional village festivals.
In winter, the area’s peacefulness is perfect for those seeking slow-paced holidays, with snowshoe hikes, winter walks, and moments of relaxation. The ski areas of Val Gardena, the Alpe di Siusi, and the Dolomiti Superski circuit are just a short drive or skibus ride away.
Laion is the ideal destination for those wanting to discover the most authentic South Tyrol: spectacular panoramas, family hospitality, traditional cuisine, and pristine nature in every season.
