Discovering Valsscharte

Located at 2,409 meters above sea level in the Zillertal Alps, the Valsscharte – also known as the Forcella di Vals – is a remote and captivating mountain pass nestled in the wild heart of the Pfunderer Valley in South Tyrol. This rocky saddle connects the area of Dun to the Edelrauthütte, along the scenic Pfunderer Höhenweg, one of the most authentic and panoramic high-altitude trekking routes in the region.

The hike to Valsscharte is recommended for experienced trekkers, as it includes sections over scree slopes, grassy ridges, and rocky terrain. The trail offers spectacular views of surrounding peaks such as the Hochfeiler (3,510 m) and the Östlicher Hochwart (3,068 m), and passes through pristine alpine environments where hikers may spot ibexes, golden eagles, and a resilient high-mountain flora thriving among rocks and pastures.

Culturally, the area preserves strong Ladin and Tyrolean traditions, reflected in the stone-and-wood mountain huts, local cuisine, and stories passed down by valley dwellers. The nearby Edelrauthütte, recently renovated, serves as a key base for hikers, offering authentic hospitality, traditional dishes like canederli, speck, and alpine cheeses, and services tailored to mountain lovers.
