Discovering Passo Giau
Passo Giau, located at 2,236 meters above sea level between Cortina d’Ampezzo, Colle Santa Lucia, and Selva di Cadore, is one of the most scenic alpine passes in the UNESCO Dolomites. From here, visitors enjoy 360-degree views of legendary peaks such as Marmolada, Tofane, Cristallo, Pelmo, Croda da Lago, Averau, and Nuvolau, making it a must-see destination for hikers, cyclists, motorcyclists, and photographers.
In summer, the pass serves as a starting point for treks to Rifugio Nuvolau, the Cinque Torri, Lago delle Baste, and the Mondeval Plateau, where the famous Mondeval Man, who lived around 7,500 years ago, was discovered. In winter, Passo Giau becomes a paradise for ski mountaineering, snowshoeing, and snowkiting, thanks to its proximity to the Lagazuoi-Cinque Torri ski area and the Great War Ski Tour.
Historically and culturally, the pass preserves significant landmarks: the Giau Wall, built to separate disputed pastures between the communities of Ampezzo and San Vito, and the border stone marking the former boundary between the Austrian Empire and the Republic of Venice. The area is also crossed by the Alta Via No. 1, one of the most famous hiking trails in the Dolomites.
Passo Giau is a legendary stage of the Giro d’Italia and the Maratona delle Dolomiti, with its 29 hairpin turns and steep gradients offering a thrilling challenge for cyclists worldwide. The presence of historic mountain huts, alpine farms, and panoramic restaurants ensures authentic hospitality and high-quality local cuisine.
Ideal for those seeking unspoiled nature, outdoor adventures, and cultural insights, Passo Giau embodies the essence of the Dolomites—a place where landscapes inspire and history blends seamlessly with beauty.
