Discovering Muraglia

The Muraglia di Giau is a unique historical structure located near Passo Giau, between San Vito di Cadore and Cortina d’Ampezzo, in the Ampezzo Dolomites. Built in 1752 to settle long-standing disputes over alpine pastures between the communities of San Vito di Cadore and Ampezzo, this impressive stone wall stretches for about 2 kilometers, standing 160 cm high and up to 80 cm wide. It cuts across the valley in a straight line, defying the natural contours of the terrain.

More than a local boundary, the Muraglia once marked the state border between the Republic of Venice and the Austrian Empire, making it a monument of significant historical importance. Along the route, visitors can still see boundary markers, inscriptions, and carved symbols such as the Lion of Saint Mark and Austrian coats of arms, offering a tangible glimpse into the region’s contested past.

The wall is visible from the road leading to Passo Giau and can be reached on foot during the summer and autumn months. The trail alongside the Muraglia offers breathtaking views of the Dolomites, including the Lastoi de Formin, Ra Gusela, and the Ciou de ra Maza lakes, making it a perfect destination for hikers and history enthusiasts alike.
