Discovering Pfitscher-Joch

The Pfitscher-Joch, also known as the Passo di Vizze, is a striking Alpine pass located at an altitude of 2,246 meters, in the heart of the Zillertal Alps, right on the border between South Tyrol and the Austrian Tyrol. This pass, which connects the Pfitschertal (Val di Vizze) with the Zamser Grund, has been a strategic transit point for millennia.

The hiking trail is accessible from the Italian side starting in Sankt Jakob in Pfitsch, or from the Austrian side via the Schlegeisspeicher, with routes that pass alpine lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, and a surprising biodiversity. Along the way, hikers may spot ibexes, golden eagles, and high-altitude flora blooming among pastures and scree slopes.

On the Italian side stands the renowned Pfitscher-Joch-Haus, a historic private mountain hut inaugurated in 1888 by Alois Rainer. Today, after major renovations, it offers authentic hospitality, bio-sauna, rooms with bathrooms, and amenities dedicated to bikers. The hut also bears witness to significant historical events: from the state border established in 1920, to archaeological excavations that uncovered human presence dating back over 9,000 years, and the 1966 attack during the South Tyrolean unrest.

Culturally, the Pfitscher-Joch is immersed in a region where Ladin and Tyrolean traditions meet—visible in the stone-and-wood huts, the local cuisine, and neighbouring villages like Pfitsch and Sterzing, guardians of a deep Alpine identity.
