Discovering Kreuzjöchl

Kreuzjöchl is a spectacular alpine saddle located within the Merano 2000 hiking area in South Tyrol, at an altitude of approximately 1,984 meters. The site, known in German as Kreuzjöchl, takes its name from the cross placed at its summit—a symbol of spirituality and a privileged panoramic viewpoint.

From the Kreuzjöchl, hikers enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding valleys, including the Adige Valley, the Sarentino Valley, and the Merano Basin. It is a popular hiking destination along the European trail E5, which links several alpine pastures and traditional mountain huts such as the Meraner Hütte, Moschwaldalm, and Maiser Alm.

In summer, it can be reached via circular routes from Falzeben or the upper station of the Merano 2000 cableway, through alpine meadows and forests typical of South Tyrol. In winter, the area becomes a scenic route for snowshoeing and winter trekking, surrounded by the serene silence of snow-covered landscapes.

The mountain huts along the trail serve traditional South Tyrolean cuisine—from dumplings to apple strudel—on panoramic terraces with breathtaking views. Well-marked paths and well-equipped huts make the hike suitable for families as well.

Easily accessible from Avelengo (Hafling) and Falzeben, the area offers hiking car parks and connections via local bus service. Lift systems ensure excellent tourist accessibility, with nearby mountain lodges and hotels offering additional accommodation options.

The Kreuzjöchl is also a place of alpine contemplation, closely tied to the Christian tradition of summit crosses. Its natural landscape, local culture, and the peaceful atmosphere make it an ideal destination for those seeking authenticity and harmony with nature.
