Discovering Sorapis Lake
Lake Sorapis, nestled among the peaks of the Ampezzo Dolomites, is not only a natural wonder but also a site rich in cultural significance. Located at 1925 m a.s.l., it is accessed from Passo Tre Croci via the scenic CAI Trail 215, which winds through breathtaking landscapes and equipped sections.
The lake lies within the Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and symbolizes the local Ladin heritage. Along the trail, hikers encounter remnants of the Vallo Alpino, a defensive system dating back to World War II, with historic bunkers and anti-tank ditches. Nearby, the Rifugio Vandelli, originally known as Sorapisshütte, managed by the CAI, reflects the area's long-standing mountaineering tradition.
Adding to its charm is the legend of King Sorapis and Misurina—a tale passed down through generations. It tells of a king transformed into a mountain whose tears formed the lake, all to please his whimsical daughter. This myth infuses the hike with a poetic link between nature and storytelling.
