Discovering Gelenkscharte

Located at 2,724 m above sea level in the Ahrntal – Valle Aurina, the Gelenkscharte is a little-used col set in the heart of the Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries-Aurina, with sweeping views of the Zillertal peaks and surrounding glaciers.

The classic route begins at Weißenbach (Riobianco, 1 334 m) and climbs through the unspoiled Mitterbachtal to Göge Alm, then scrambles over scree and rock to the pass. This 17 km loop with 1 450 m of elevation gain offers high-altitude rest stops and panoramas ranging from jagged Dolomite pinnacles to subalpine forests.

Well marked but demanding sure-footedness—especially on scree slopes and spring snowfields near the col—the trail rewards experienced hikers with a sense of true wilderness. Those seeking even greater adventure can continue along the Stabeler Höhenweg, a high-route linking the Schwarzenstein and Chemnitzer huts via the Gelenkscharte.

Beyond the technical challenge, the area captivates with rich biodiversity: blooming rhododendrons, shy marmots, and golden eagles soaring overhead. Ladin and Tyrolean traditions live on in the mountain huts, where you can taste time-honored dishes like canederli and speck amidst an authentic alpine atmosphere.
