Discovering Äussere Gelenkscharte

Located at approximately 2,714 meters in the Ahrntal (Aurina Valley), the Äußere Gelenkscharte is one of the most spectacular and remote mountain passes in the Rieserfernergruppe range. Nestled within the Naturpark Rieserferner-Ahrn, this alpine saddle is a coveted destination for experienced hikers and mountaineers seeking untouched landscapes and absolute silence.

There is no standard hiking trail to reach Äußere Gelenkscharte: access is via high-altitude routes, often unmarked, requiring excellent physical condition, mountain experience, and technical gear. Ascents typically begin from areas like Weissenbach, passing through Tratter Alm and Göge Alm, crossing alpine terrain rich in rare flora and offering chances to spot ibex, marmots, and golden eagles.

From a naturalistic perspective, the area features residual glaciers, steep rock faces, and glacial valleys, showcasing the raw power of nature. The nature park, established in 1988, is one of South Tyrol’s largest protected areas and borders the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Culturally, the region preserves traces of ancient settlements and transhumance routes. Near Schöllberg Göge, archaeologists have discovered prehistoric artifacts, including wooden ritual objects that remain under study.

Äußere Gelenkscharte is ideal for those seeking challenging alpine hikes, wild nature, and authentic mountain experiences. A place where time stands still and every step reconnects you with the essence of the Dolomites.
