Discovering Antholzerscharte

Antholzerscharte, or Passo di Anterselva, is a breathtaking alpine pass located at 2,830 meters above sea level in the heart of the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, one of South Tyrol’s most glaciated and pristine protected areas. It connects the Antholz Valley with the Defereggental in East Tyrol, crossing untouched landscapes, alpine lakes, and imposing glaciers.

The Antholzersee (Lake Antholz), South Tyrol’s third-largest lake, is the ideal starting point for high-altitude hikes. A nature trail with 16 educational stations winds around the lake, offering insights into local fauna, flora, and geology. Rare species such as the rock ptarmigan, alpine hare, and Androsace alpina highlight the park’s exceptional biodiversity.

The pass is a sought-after destination for hikers, ski mountaineers, and lovers of panoramic trekking. The Biathlon Arena Alto Adige, with its international competitions and summer activities, keeps the area vibrant year-round. The Nature Park Visitor Center also offers educational experiences and themed trails.

From a cultural-historical perspective, the region preserves valuable landmarks such as Castelvecchio Rasun, Gothic churches, and award-winning rural architecture. The Ladin and Tyrolean cultures are deeply rooted in daily life, reflected in alpine craftsmanship and traditional celebrations like the Krampus parades and the Sacred Heart Fires.

Antholzerscharte is a perfect destination for those seeking authenticity, deep connection with the mountains, and slow tourism, where glacial silence, historical memory, and living traditions converge.
