Discovering Schwarze Scharte

Bocchetta Nera (Schwarze Scharte, BZ) is a spectacular alpine saddle located at 2,972 meters above sea level in the heart of the Rieserferner Group, straddling the border between South Tyrol and Austria. This panoramic pass connects the upper Antholz Valley with the Austrian side of the Defereggen Valley, and is accessible via moderately difficult hiking trails surrounded by glaciers, glacial lakes, and dramatic rock faces.

The area is renowned for its alpine biodiversity, featuring outcrops of volcanic serpentinite and a rich variety of high-altitude flora and fauna. The hike to Bocchetta Nera is ideal for lovers of mindful trekking, ski mountaineering, and nature photography, thanks to its wild and striking scenery.

Culturally, the region preserves Ladin and Tyrolean traditions, visible in the alpine huts and nearby villages. The mountain farms along the route offer typical dishes and authentic hospitality, while historic architecture and traditional festivals enrich the experience for those seeking a deeper connection with alpine identity.

Schwarze Scharte is a perfect destination for those who wish to immerse themselves in an environment of silence, untamed beauty, and mountain culture, far from mainstream tourism. A place where every step tells the story of the Alps.
