Discovering Passo della Mendola
The Mendola Pass (Passo della Mendola) at 1,363 metres above sea level is one of the most fascinating alpine passes in Trentino-Alto Adige, located along State Road 42, which connects the Val di Non with the Oltradige area and the city of Bolzano. The pass lies along the Mendola Ridge, a mountain chain dividing the Adige Valley from the Val di Non: to the east, cliffs drop steeply toward the Adige; to the west, the slopes descend gently toward Cles and the valley’s orchards.
Set between Monte Roen and Monte Penegal, the pass is a strategic spot for lovers of nature, hiking, and cycling. Several trails start from the pass, including those leading to Roen, Macaion, the Archduke Eugenio Peak, and the scenic Toval. A panoramic road also leads to Monte Penegal, where a viewpoint at 1,737 metres offers breathtaking views over Bolzano, the Adige Valley, and the Dolomites.
The Mendola Pass is easily reached by the Mendola funicular, which departs from Caldaro and offers a charming ride through forests and alpine landscapes. In the past, the pass was also served by the narrow-gauge Dermulo-Fondo-Mendola railway, active until the 1930s.
Today, the pass hosts hotels, historic villas, and a cultural centre of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, making it an ideal destination for excursions, relaxation, and fresh mountain air in every season.
