Discovering Altrei

Located at 1,209 meters above sea level on a sunny plateau between South Tyrol and the Val di Fiemme, Altrei is the only German-speaking village in this Trentino valley. Nestled in the heart of the Monte Corno Nature Park (Naturpark Trudner Horn), it’s an ideal destination for those seeking a nature holiday, scenic hikes, and sustainable tourism.

Established in 1980, the park is the southernmost protected area in South Tyrol and boasts the highest biodiversity in the region, thanks to its sub-Mediterranean climate. Well-marked trails lead to enchanting spots like Krabesalm, Malga Monte Corno, and Passo Cisa, winding through larch forests, peat bogs, and flower-filled meadows. In winter, visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and peaceful walks in the snow; in summer, the area is perfect for mountain biking, nordic walking, and relaxing at the Kneipp facility in Sandegg.

Altrei is also famous for its traditional Lupin Coffee, a caffeine- and gluten-free local beverage made from roasted sweet lupin, barley, and wheat. Now a Slow Food Presidia, this drink has over a century of history and is featured in themed hikes and tastings.

Culturally, the village is home to the Parish Church of Saints Catherine and James, dating back to the 15th century and renovated in neo-Gothic style in 1871. Every July 25th, the San Giacomo Festival brings the village to life with music, food, and alpine traditions.
