Discovering Frankbachjoch

Frankbachjoch, located in the stunning Ahrntal Valley (Valle Aurina) in South Tyrol, is a little-known but breathtaking alpine pass, perfect for experienced hikers and nature lovers seeking authentic mountain adventures. Nestled among the majestic peaks of the Zillertal Alps, this high-altitude crossing—at around 2,400 meters—offers sweeping views of untouched valleys, alpine meadows, and shimmering glaciers.

While not a developed tourist destination, Frankbachjoch is a prime hiking spot, accessible via mountain trails from nearby villages such as St. Johann (San Giovanni) and Luttach (Lutago). It’s often included in multi-day treks or circular routes like the Rieserferner Trail or stages of the Ahrntal High Route, making it a favorite among seasoned hikers.

Nearby, the Frankbach Waterfall is a must-see natural wonder, set in a fairytale forest and easily reached via the Witches’ Trail (Hexensteig). This family-friendly path blends nature and folklore, guiding visitors through wooden bridges, babbling brooks, and enchanting scenery.

Frankbachjoch is also a great spot for wildlife observation: marmots, golden eagles, and chamois roam these heights, turning every hike into a discovery. In winter, the area becomes a haven for snowshoeing and ski touring, far from crowded slopes.
