Discovering Forcella Pongol

Forcella Pongol, located in the municipality of La Valle Agordina in the province of Belluno, is a little-known but captivating mountain saddle sitting at approximately 1,547 meters above sea level, nestled between Monte Celo and Monte Vallaraz. Deep in the heart of the Agordino Dolomites, within the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, it offers an ideal destination for experienced hikers seeking solitude, wild nature, and authentic alpine views.

The most scenic route begins in La Muda, along the SS203 Agordina road, and follows CAI trails no. 546 and 545. After an initial forested section, the path enters Val Clusa, a remote valley rich in biodiversity, where hikers encounter the Bait de Fòlega, a rustic wooden shelter that provides refuge and reflects the region’s pastoral heritage. From here, the trail ascends toward Forcella Pongol, winding through dwarf pines, rocky outcrops, and stunning vistas over the Agordino basin.

This area is part of the “La Montagna Dimenticata” (The Forgotten Mountain) project, which highlights historic trails linked to rural life, mining traditions, and wartime events of the 20th century. The hike can be extended toward Forcella dei Campanili or Monte Talvena, offering a complete experience of nature, history, and alpine culture.
