Discovering San Michele all'Adige
The charming village of San Michele all’Adige is located in the scenic Piana Rotaliana, one of the most renowned wine-growing areas in Trentino, nestled between mountains and crossed by the Adige river. Its origins date back to the Roman era, when it was founded as a strategic point along the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, an important route linking Italy with Central Europe.
Today, San Michele all’Adige is known throughout Italy for the presence of the prestigious Edmund Mach Foundation, formerly the San Michele Agricultural Institute, a center of excellence in agriculture, food and environmental research and education. The area’s agricultural and wine-making vocation is reflected in the orderly landscapes, vast vineyards and numerous local producers who preserve authentic traditions and flavors.
A gem not to miss is the Museum of the Customs and Traditions of the Trentino People, housed in the former Augustinian monastery, which offers an engaging journey through the history, crafts, and daily life of the Alpine communities.
San Michele is also a great starting point for nature excursions: on foot, by bike or on horseback, along the river or through the vineyards.
