Discovering Keilbachjöchl

A high‑altitude pass on the border between the Valle di Selva dei Molini and the Austrian Tyrol, the Keilbachjöchl offers a panoramic crossing through alpine pastures, moraine basins, and ridges at the foot of the glaciers of the Zillertal Alps. Located within the Rieserferner‑Ahrn Nature Park, it is a destination for experienced hikers seeking high‑mountain silence, wide horizons, and unspoiled nature far from the busiest routes.

The most popular access routes start from the Lappago/Selva dei Molini area and the upper Keilbach valley: CAI/AVS trails climb through conifer forests and alpine meadows to high‑altitude plateaus, with sections over scree and panoramic ridges. In summer, the route is ideal for panoramic trekking and landscape photography; in autumn, the larches turn the slopes golden and visibility is often crystal clear. With adequate experience, the area also lends itself to loop itineraries linking mountain huts and nearby passes.

The cultural setting enriches the experience: historic mills, traditional farmsteads, and the practice of alpine pasture farming characterise the valley villages, while the old transit routes tell of centuries of exchanges between border communities. Seasonal mountain huts offer authentic stops with typical South Tyrolean dishes, perfect for slow tourism that values unhurried rhythms and essential landscapes.
