Discovering Passo del Santicolo
The Sandjöchl Pass (Italian: Passo del Santicolo) rises to 2,165 meters above sea level, just above the village of Gossensaß (Italian: Colle Isarco) in South Tyrol, in the heart of the Upper Isarco Valley. This peaceful and little-known alpine pass is ideal for those seeking unspoiled nature, hiking trails, and mountain biking routes far from the crowds.
The route begins in Innertunzen, a hamlet of Gossensaß, and follows trail no. 1. The climb covers about 10 km with 800 meters of elevation gain, on a mix of asphalt, forest roads, and alpine paths. It takes about 3 hours on foot or 1.5 hours by mountain bike or e-bike.
Along the way, you pass through larch forests, alpine meadows, and enjoy sweeping views of the Stubai Alps. At the top, the pass offers peace, panoramic views, and no cars — the Sandjöchl is accessible only on foot or by bike.
There are no huts or food stops, so be sure to bring water and snacks. In summer, the meadows bloom with alpine flowers, and wildlife like marmots and eagles are often spotted.
The Sandjöchl is perfect for experienced hikers and cyclists looking to explore an authentic, tranquil side of South Tyrol, where time slows down and nature is the main attraction.
