Discovering Lago Santo
Lago Santo, located at 1,200 meters above sea level in the enchanting Val di Cembra, is one of Trentino’s most captivating destinations for those seeking tranquility, nature walks, and a touch of spirituality. This glacial lake, surrounded by pine forests, natural beaches, and fresh mountain air, is the perfect place to unwind far from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Its name comes from a local legend: it’s said the lake was born from a plot of land disputed by heirs, until water began to gush forth, threatening the village of Cembra. Only the intervention of the parish priest—who threw the Virgin Mary's ring into the ground - was able to stop the flood. Since then, the site has been considered “holy.”
The loop trail around the lake is easy and suitable for all ages, making it ideal for families and casual hikers. More challenging routes lead to Rifugio Sauch and the Dürerweg, a scenic trail named after the painter Albrecht Dürer, who was enchanted by the landscape.
Near the lake, you’ll find a cozy hotel with a traditional restaurant, where you can enjoy local Trentino dishes like herb-filled ravioli, cured meats, and rustic desserts. Lago Santo is a year-round destination: perfect in summer for relaxing and hiking, in autumn for vibrant foliage, and in winter for snowshoeing and snowy treks.
