Discovering Hundskehl Joch

A historic gateway between the Ahrntal Valley and the Austrian Tyrol, the Hundskehljoch is an alpine pass at 2,557 m offering wide‑open views of glaciers and border valleys. The classic route starts from Prettau and follows trails 16b and 16 towards the Waldner Alm and Waldner See, crossing forests, high‑altitude pastures, and moraines to reach the saddle, in the heart of the Rieserferner‑Ahrn Nature Park.

From the village (1,455 m) the climb gains about 1,100 m and takes 3.5–4 hours. The 16b variant leads to the Waldner Alm (2,068 m) and skirts the Waldner See (2,250 m) before ascending to the ridge; links with trail 20 allow for traverses and loops.

Beyond its scenic beauty, the Hundskehljoch has strong historical significance: for centuries it was a transit route for shepherds, traders, and miners, connecting border communities. The ascent can be combined with visits to the South Tyrol Mining Museum in Prettau and the Holy Spirit Sanctuary in Kasern, creating an itinerary that blends nature, memory, and alpine spirituality.

Best in summer for trekking and landscape photography, it requires sure‑footedness and good fitness. In autumn, larch trees set the slopes ablaze; on clear days the view stretches to the Venediger Group and peaks over 3,000 m.
