Discovering Griesbachjöchle

The Griesbachjöchl is a panoramic mountain pass in the Val Passiria, ideal for half‑day hikes through larch forests, alpine pastures, and open views of the Sarntal Alps and the Texel Group. From the village of Plan, well‑marked trails lead up to the jöchl, with gentle ascents and natural balconies perfect for photography and birdwatching. The route suits moderately trained hikers and can be extended toward Valtina and the area’s traditional mountain huts, where visitors can enjoy typical South Tyrolean dishes such as dumplings, speck, and alpine cheeses.

Rural culture enlivens the summer with festivals and transhumance events, while autumn and spring offer crisp colors and ideal conditions for slow walks. In winter, the slopes around the pass become a paradise for snowshoeing and short ski‑mountaineering tours, thanks to their regular gradients and sheltered woods.

For those seeking longer routes, the Griesbachjöchl connects to traverses toward nearby mountain huts or sections of the Merano High Mountain Trail, creating panoramic loops among alpine farms and meadows. Clear signage, flexible timings, and the local food culture make the experience complete in every season.
