Discovering Segonzano
Segonzano, nestled on the slopes of the Dosso di Segonzano and the Ceramont, lies in the heart of the enchanting Val di Cembra. Composed of 16 scattered hamlets, it is an ideal destination for those seeking nature, culture, and tradition.
The name Segonzano is closely linked to the famous Earth Pyramids, one of the few examples of such formations worldwide. Known locally as Omeni de Segonzan, these stone columns, up to 20 meters high, were shaped over millions of years by water erosion. The pyramids mark the spectacular final stage of the Albrecht Dürer Path, a 40 km cultural and naturalistic trail starting from San Floriano, recalling the passage of the famous German Renaissance painter. Along the route, divided into stages of varying difficulty, visitors can admire landscapes that inspired his watercolors.
Segonzano also boasts a strong religious tourism tradition. Notable places of worship include the Church of the Trinity in Stedro, the Church of the Immaculate in Piazzo, and San Nicolò in Sevignano. Particularly renowned is the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Aiuto, accessible from the hamlet of Sabion, which houses a Marian painting to which numerous miracles have been attributed.
The area is rich in authentic flavors: besides apples, strawberries, and blueberries, Segonzano is home to vineyards producing the famous Müller Thurgau, one of Trentino’s most appreciated white wines. The territory is also known for porphyry processing, artistic crafts, and woodwork.
Segonzano has also played a significant historical role: its spruce trees were once used for building ships for the American fleet. In 1796, it was the scene of the Battle of Segonzano, where Tyrolean troops defeated Napoleon’s army near the Segonzano Castle. Today the castle stands in evocative ruins, reachable with a panoramic walk through vineyards and apple orchards starting from Piazzo.
Segonzano is therefore a place where nature, history, faith, and tradition come together, offering unforgettable experiences in the heart of the Val di Cembra.
