Discovering Lago Erdemolo
Lake Erdemolo, located at an altitude of 2,005 meters in the wild Lagorai mountain range, is one of the most iconic hiking destinations in Trentino. Nestled in the heart of the Valle dei Mocheni (Fersental), it can be reached via a scenic loop trail starting from Palù del Fersina, a village where the ancient Bavarian-origin language Mòcheno is still spoken by the local community.
The lake has a distinctive heart shape and is surrounded by larch forests, flower-filled clearings, and high-altitude pastures, offering pristine landscapes and breathtaking views. The most popular route follows trail no.343 to the Rifugio Sette Selle (2,000 m), then continues on no.324 to the lake. The return path follows trail no.325, completing a loop of approximately 10.5 km with 867 meters of elevation gain.
In summer, Lake Erdemolo often retains snow and ice, keeping its waters cold and crystal-clear—perfect for Kneipp-style foot baths and moments of alpine relaxation. The area is rich in biodiversity, with blooming rhododendrons, sightings of marmots, golden eagles, and roe deer. From the lake, hikers can also reach Pizzo Alto and Monte Lago, ideal for more experienced trekkers.
The Valle dei Mocheni is a unique territory with strong Central European cultural roots, featuring traditional architecture, alpine legends, and annual events celebrating Mòcheno heritage, including music, cuisine, and local crafts.
