Discovering Birnlücke
The Forcella del Picco, also known as Birnlücke, is a spectacular alpine pass located at 2665 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Zillertal Alps, on the border between Italy and Austria. This historic crossing connects the Aurina Valley with the Salzburg region and is one of the most scenic and symbolic hiking routes in the area.
The hike begins in the small village of Casere, at around 1600 metres, following trail no. 13 that climbs the valley through forests, streams and traditional alpine pastures until reaching the beautiful Lahneralm. From there, the path becomes steeper and leads to the panoramic Brigata Tridentina Refuge, located at 2441 metres, an ideal base for the final ascent to the pass.
The trail to the Forcella del Picco winds through high-altitude meadows, glacial terrain and ancient trading paths. Once at the saddle, the view opens up over the vast landscape of the High Tauern, the Vetta d’Italia, and the Dolomite peaks to the south. The panorama is wide, silent, and rich in alpine charm.
With around 1070 metres of elevation gain and a total duration of about 6 hours, the route is suitable for fit hikers, even though it does not present major technical difficulties. The environment is perfect for those who love panoramic trekking, mountain photography, and authentic nature experiences.
The Forcella del Picco is also a place of great historical and geographical significance: a natural crossing point between cultures, languages and landscapes — now a symbol of unity and beauty, immersed in the silence of the great alpine mountains.
