Discovering Santa Valburga

Santa Valburga (1,190 m a.s.l.) is the main village of the Ultimo Valley, located in South Tyrol. Though it is the second largest settlement, it is the administrative center of the Municipality of Ultimo, which includes the upper valley and the hamlets of San Nicolò and Santa Gertrude.

This charming alpine village is perched on a natural terrace overlooking the Zòccolo Lake and the surrounding mountains, stretching to the distant Ortles glaciers. To the south, dense forests cover the slopes, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking peace and unspoiled nature.

A walk through the village reveals wooden houses, ancient barns (tabià), picturesque chapels, and traditional farmsteads. Among them stands the Museum Culten, housed in a 17th-century farmhouse, showcasing the valley’s rural culture with everyday objects and authentic reconstructions.

The parish church of Santa Valburga, first mentioned in 1278, stands on a small hill at the entrance to the village. Further up, at 1,632 metres, rises the gothic church of San Maurizio, likely the oldest in the valley, and reachable via a scenic hike.

In winter, Santa Valburga becomes a fairy-tale landscape. The nearby Schwemmalm ski area offers slopes for all levels, while the surrounding trails are ideal for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in peaceful snowy woods.

Santa Valburga is the perfect destination for those seeking an authentic experience of South Tyrolean hospitality, tradition, nature, and outdoor activities throughout the year.
