Discovering Puos d'Alpago

Nestled in the lush Alpago basin, between Lake Santa Croce and the Belluno Prealps, Puos d’Alpago is a charming village rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Surrounded by pristine alpine landscapes, it’s an ideal destination for hiking, mountain biking, and air sports, with trails like the Alta Via No. 7 and routes that hosted the European MTB Championships. Nearby, Lake Santa Croce is perfect for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and paragliding, thanks to the steady winds from Monte Dolada.

Puos has ancient roots dating back to Roman times, as evidenced by archaeological finds and its name “Pos” (meaning “well”). In the Middle Ages, it was home to castles and water-powered mills, and under Venetian rule, it became a hub for agricultural fairs. The Church of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, whose feast is celebrated on August 24, houses works by Frigimelica the Elder and other Belluno artists. The hamlets of Sitran, Valzella, Cornei, Bastia, and Sommacosta feature historic chapels and picturesque corners.

Local gastronomy is a highlight: polenta, lamb, alpine cheeses, cured meats, and traditional desserts are celebrated in village festivals and restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Locanda San Lorenzo. The Ethnographic Museum showcases rural life and local crafts, while events like the Feast of Saint Bartholomew and the Feast of the Redeemer bring the village to life with music and folklore.
