Discovering Lago Verde

Lago Verde, Grünsee in German, is located at 2,529 meters above sea level in the municipality of Ultimo (BZ), in the heart of the Ultimo Valley, one of the wildest and most enchanting areas of South Tyrol. This artificial alpine lake, nestled among the towering peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale Group, is surrounded by majestic mountains such as Mt. Fontana Bianca, Mt. Sternai, and Mt. Gioveretto, making it a dream destination for experienced hikers, trekking enthusiasts, and nature photographers.

The lake can be reached via trail no. 140 from Fontana Bianca or Santa Gertrude, with routes leading to the Canziani Mountain Hut at Green Lake (2,560 m), a base for ascents to the surrounding summits. The landscape is open and dramatic, offering sweeping views and a unique alpine biodiversity.

From a technical standpoint, Green Lake was created by an 86-meter-high gravity dam made of earth and stone, completed in 1967. Its waters feed a hydroelectric power station located at Fontana Bianca Lake, with a capacity of 10.2 MW and an annual output of around 48 GWh—an outstanding example of sustainable engineering in harmony with nature.
