Discovering Lago di Santa Croce
Lake Santa Croce is the largest lake in the province of Belluno and the second-largest in Veneto. This natural lake formed when a landslide blocked Val Lapisina and diverted the Piave River, creating the Sella del Fadalto. Nestled between Farra d’Alpago, Puos d’Alpago and Ponte nelle Alpi, the lake mirrors the Alpago Mountains and Nevegal in its clear waters.
The lakeside villages feature traditional stepped houses with rooftops made of stone slabs, straw, and reed thatch, exemplifying authentic alpine rural architecture.
A highlight is the Sbarai Nature Reserve, a wetland habitat of over 30 hectares, ideal for birdwatching. It hosts species like the Little Grebe, Lapwing, Reed Warbler, Pied Wagtail, Grey Heron, White Stork, and Common Redstart. A flat, easy trail with observation points and majestic white willows enhances the experience.
On the southern shore, in the Bay of the Mermaids, stands the Farra d’Alpago fish-breeding centre. Built in wood and concrete with panoramic windows, it promotes the conservation of native species such as whitefish, pike, and trout, and has an educational function for schools.
With consistent thermal winds, the lake is a renowned destination for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing. In summer, colorful sails dot the blue water, drawing enthusiasts from across Europe.
For sports and relaxation, the eastern shore offers beaches, bathing zones, picnic areas, beach volleyball and soccer courts, plus a playground for children.
A 17.4 km loop around the lake is perfect for walking or cycling. Starting from Puos d’Alpago and passing through Farra, Pojatte, Santa Croce del Lago, La Secca, and Bastia, it offers varied terrain and scenic views.
Lake Santa Croce combines natural beauty, outdoor sport, wildlife observation, and cultural authenticity—an ideal destination for lovers of adventure, relaxation, and nature.
