Discovering Certosa

At over 1,300 meters above sea level, nestled in the peaceful Val Senales, Certosa (Karthaus) is a truly unique destination in South Tyrol, where history, spirituality and nature blend into a timeless atmosphere. The village developed around the ancient Carthusian monastery of Allerengelsberg, founded in 1326 and dissolved in 1782 by Emperor Joseph II. The restored cloister, the monastery walls and the herbal garden still form the beating heart of the village, which retains its nickname as the “Village of Silence.”

The Via Monachorum, or “Path of Silence,” is a themed trail that winds through Certosa with twelve stations dedicated to meditation and monastic history. In summer, panoramic hikes lead to the Klosteralm mountain hut (2,500 m) and the Sassalbo Lake, while in winter the proximity to the Val Senales Glacier and the cross-country ski trails of Lazaun make Certosa an ideal base for winter sports and snowshoeing.

The village hosts temporary exhibitions in the cloister and promotes slow, sustainable tourism. Its strategic location, just a few kilometers from Merano, makes it a perfect starting point for exploring the Texel Group Nature Park and the Merano High Mountain Trail, which crosses the valley in two stages.
