Discovering Butzenpass

Passo del Pozzo, also known by its German name Butzenpass, is a remote and fascinating mountain pass located in South Tyrol (Alto Adige), within the breathtaking Stelvio National Park. At an altitude of 3,260 meters, it is one of the highest and least-known passes in the Southern Rhaetian Alps, surrounded by a pristine glacial landscape among the peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale Group.

This pass ideally connects the area of Stavel and the Val di Pejo with the glacial basins of the Alpe Pozzi Alti, offering spectacular views of rocky ridges, snowfields, and wild valleys. Access to Passo del Pozzo is via demanding hiking routes, such as the loop trail starting from the Forte dei Pozzi, crossing fixed-rope sections and reaching the pass before descending toward the Rifugio Francesco Denza.

The area attracts experienced hikers and high-mountain enthusiasts, drawn by its authenticity and the absolute silence that reigns here. The biodiversity is remarkable: marmots, ibexes, and golden eagles inhabit the slopes, while alpine flora offers rare and colorful blooms in summer. In winter, the pass becomes a realm of snow and ice, perfect for ski mountaineering and extreme snowshoeing.

How to get there: From Stavel (Val di Sole), follow signs to the Forte dei Pozzi. Trails are only partially marked: alpine guide recommended.
