Discovering Forcella Caserata
Discover one of the wildest and most authentic corners of the Friulian Dolomites, where Forcella Caserata awaits you at 1,540 meters above sea level in the heart of the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park. This spectacular alpine saddle is a highly attractive hiking destination for those seeking genuine mountain experiences away from the crowds, in a UNESCO-protected environment of rare beauty.
STARTING POINTS: Two main access points lead to the saddle. The classic route starts from Pian de Cea (850m) near Claut, crossing the scenic Grave di Giere for 4 km to the picturesque Casera Podestine (1024m). The alternative starts from the Ciùl Dam near Tramonti di Sopra, ideal for multi-day traverses.
DETAILED ROUTE: From Casera Podestine, the CAI 398 trail begins, created by the Friulian Dolomites Park. The path climbs steeply through dense spruce and beech forests, alternating wooded sections with open areas and debris channels. Well-marked but challenging, the trail requires about 2 hours of steady ascent on occasionally exposed terrain.
A key stop is Casera Caserata (1479m), an ancient alpine hut offering a natural shelter and breathtaking views. From here, a short 20-minute climb leads to the Forcella Caserata itself.
TREASURES ALONG THE WAY: Trail 398 hides unique surprises, such as dinosaur fossil footprints—a remarkable geological testimony that makes the hike even more fascinating for families and nature enthusiasts.
Along the way, immerse yourself in the pristine alpine flora of the Friulian Dolomites. In spring and summer, meadows bloom with rhododendrons, edelweiss, and gentians, while in autumn the beeches create spectacular color displays.
STRATEGIC POINT: Forcella Caserata is a key stop for multi-day alpine traverses, allowing connections to Tramonti di Sopra via the Ciùl Dam for a complete Friulian Dolomites experience. Shelter at the saddle enables overnight stays in a wild environment.
For nature photography lovers, this area offers unique views of the Pregoiane and Caserine-Cornaget Group, one of the most remote and wild areas of the Friulian Dolomites.
DIFFICULTY: Rated E (Hiking), requires good physical fitness and mountain experience. The trail includes steep sections and occasionally exposed terrain.
RECOMMENDED PERIOD: May to October, with a preference for summer months. Full mountain gear is essential.
Come and discover this hidden gem where nature reigns supreme and the silence of the mountains will captivate you forever.
