Discovering Schlanders
With about 6000 inhabitants, Silandro is the capital of the Val Venosta, located on the left bank of the Adige River, at the foot of the majestic Monte Sole. The municipality is surrounded by sunny orchards and towering peaks that border the valley of Silandro, called Schlandrauntal in German.
Silandro is an ancient village, well evidenced by the presence of two remarkable castles, Castel Schlandersburg and Castel Schlandersberg, as well as historic residences and churches. Among these stands the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, with the chapel of Saint Michael and its towering bell tower: at 90 meters, it is the tallest in Tyrol, slightly leaning westwards, perhaps to resist the winds coming from Lasa, where the highest marble quarry in Europe is located.
The historic center of Silandro, closed to traffic, invites visitors to stroll through charming alleys, bars, and typical shops selling local products and South Tyrolean specialties. The Karl Schönherr Cultural House is the cultural heart of the town, featuring a cinema-theater and event spaces.
For nature lovers, Silandro offers about 80 km of trails winding from the valleys up to the Mezzodì and Tramontana mountains within the Stelvio National Park. You can enjoy peaceful walks along the irrigation canals, vineyards, or more challenging routes. Monte Tramontana is popular with bikers and offers spectacular views of the Venosta Alps and the Ortler Group, while Mezzodì is a spot for ski mountaineering.
A special place is the avimundus Visitor Center, dedicated to the fascinating world of birds, one of the Stelvio National Park’s informative facilities located in Silandro.
Finally, Silandro is also known for its native vineyards, producing excellent white wine, perfect to accompany local specialties during a holiday full of flavor and tradition.
