Discovering Forcella Giaveid

Located in the municipality of Barcis, in the Valcellina, Forcella Giaveid is a fascinating and little-traveled hiking destination. Nestled within the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park, this mountain saddle serves as a historic and scenic passage between the Resettum and Molassa valleys, offering spectacular views of the rugged peaks of the Monte Raut Group and the Andreis Mountains.

The most well-known route to reach Forcella Giaveid begins in the hamlet of Le Roppe, near Barcis, and passes the picturesque Bivacco Molassa along CAI Trail No. 974. The itinerary spans approximately 17 kilometers with a total elevation gain of nearly 1,500 meters, making it suitable for experienced and well-equipped hikers. The final ascent winds through dense woodland, with steep sections and aged trail markings, but the landscape rewards every effort: silent forests, crystal-clear streams, and breathtaking Dolomite panoramas.

Culturally, Forcella Giaveid is linked to episodes of the Italian Resistance and to local legends, including one that tells of a supposed passage by Rommel during World War I, now considered part of regional folklore.
