Discovering Meiern

Meiern, a hamlet in the municipality of Martello in Val Venosta, is a picturesque South Tyrolean village located at 1,312 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Stelvio National Park. Also known as Martello paese, Meiern stands out for its sunny position, breathtaking alpine landscapes, and strong rural identity. It’s the perfect starting point for hikes in Val Martello, both in summer and winter, among panoramic alpine huts, glacial lakes, and Dolomite peaks.

From Meiern, trails lead to spectacular destinations such as Lake Covelano, the Covelano Saddle, and the majestic Punta di Lasa (3,305 m), the highest peak above the village. Routes like those to Morterer Leger or Maso Steinwand cross rocky steps and alpine pastures, offering unique views of the Hare’s Ear Glacier.

In the colder months, Meiern becomes an ideal destination for snowshoeing in Val Martello, cross-country skiing, and sledding. The Nordic Ski and Biathlon Center provides groomed trails and lessons for all levels, while Malga Livi and Malga Peder-Stier are perfect stops for winter excursions.

Meiern is renowned for its mountain strawberry cultivation, with berries ripening slowly up to 1,800 meters thanks to the valley’s unique microclimate. The Church of Saint Walburga, with its bells ringing to the “Salve Regina” antiphon, is the spiritual heart of the village.
