Discovering Laas

In the heart of Val Venosta, at an altitude of 868 meters, lies Lasa (Laas), internationally renowned for its pure white Laaser Marmor, often referred to as “white gold.” This exceptional marble has been used in prestigious works such as the statue of Pallas Athene in Vienna, the Grand Central Terminal in New York, and over 86,000 headstones for American soldiers fallen in Europe.

The historic village center is rich in sculptures, fountains, and architectural details carved from Laaser Marmor. The Pfarrkirche St. Johannes der Täufer (Parish Church of St. John the Baptist) and the Marmor Museum tell the story of local quarrying and craftsmanship. The historic Marmorbahn (marble railway), now a scenic hiking trail, connects the quarries to the Alpine pastures.

Lasa is a gateway to the Stelvio National Park, with hiking routes leading to the Vedretta di Lasa, the Upper and Lower Lasa Alpine pastures, and the Mountains of Lasa. The ancient Via Claudia Augusta passes through the village, winding among apple orchards and historic hamlets.

Also famous for its Val Venosta apricots, Lasa celebrates the annual Marmor & Marille festival, blending local produce, art, and tradition. In autumn, the Törggelen season invites visitors to enjoy new wine and South Tyrolean specialties in a warm, convivial atmosphere.
