Discovering Hochjoch
The Giogo Alto (Hochjoch), located at 2,857 meters between the Val Senales (Schnalstal) and Austria’s Ötztal, is one of the most stunning alpine passes in the Ötztal Alps, right in the heart of South Tyrol (BZ). Surrounded by perennial glaciers and towering peaks, Giogo Alto is a must-visit destination for mountain lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs.
The Giogo Alto Glacier (Hochjochferner) hosts the Schnalstaler Gletscher ski area, open nearly year-round. Visitors can ski even in summer, hike across compact snow and enjoy sweeping views stretching from the Dolomites to the Ortler Group.
This pass is closely linked to the discovery of Ötzi, the famous Iceman found in 1991 near the border between Italy and Austria. The nearby Iceman Ötzi Peak, a panoramic platform at 3,212 meters, offers an immersive experience combining archaeology and nature, with views over the discovery site and surrounding summits.
The Bella Vista Refuge (Schutzhütte Schöne Aussicht), accessible by foot or cable car, is a perfect stop for enjoying South Tyrolean cuisine at high altitude and relaxing in a panoramic sauna. From here, hiking trails and ski mountaineering routes lead to the Similaun, Finailspitze and Giogo Basso, ideal for experienced trekkers and alpine adventurers.
